Abbott disclosed on Thursday (July 17, 2025) that its cancer diagnostics business suffered a cyberattack. In a statement posted on its website, the medical device company said that a "limited number of internal systems" within its cancer diagnostics business were subject to unauthorized access. The statement emphasized that the incident did not affect Abbott's other businesses, sites, or systems.

Abbott's cancer diagnostics business includes Exact Sciences, which it acquired earlier this year for $21 billion. According to the statement, Exact Sciences' legacy systems are separate from Abbott's systems.

"This incident will not affect any business operations, products or product supply, manufacturing or laboratory operations, nor our ability to serve patients," Abbott said in the statement. The company currently expects that the incident will not have a material impact on its business or financial results.

After discovering the attack, Abbott has contacted third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement, and is currently investigating what information may have been accessed. Abbott did not disclose the specific type of information accessed and declined to further respond to MedTech Dive's request for comment regarding when the attack was discovered and the type of information involved.

Abbott is one of several medical technology companies that have disclosed cyberattacks in recent months. In March, Stryker suffered an attack that disrupted its ordering, shipping, and manufacturing systems for several weeks and impacted first-quarter earnings. Since then, Intuitive, Medtronic, iRhythm, and AdaptHealth have also disclosed cyberattacks.
